Taylor Swift is back with new music, and the rollout has been exactly as elaborate as you’d expect. She announced Tuesday that her new single, “Patient Zero,” arrives this Friday, September 25… and it turns out it won’t be flying solo.
Swift revealed the news on Instagram after a countdown appeared on her website, sharing that “Patient Zero” will be joined by three more new songs “Pink Clouding,” “Cleveland!” and “Babylon” as part of an expanded release of The Life of a Showgirl called The Encore.
She explained the backstory herself: “About a year ago, you guys did a truly unfathomable thing… You gave The Life of a Showgirl the biggest first week for an album in history. I took a trip to Sweden to celebrate with Max and Shellback, my two collaborators on this album. Really we just wanted to reflect and take in how grateful we were for the moment we were in, but there was a studio there and we did what we do when we feel anything at all: We wrote more songs.”

Swift teased the announcement for days before making it official, swapping the O’s in her Instagram bio for zeros, changing lyrics on Apple Music the same way, and posting a mysterious countdown. Fans had also spotted a string of cryptic phrases during a Law & Order: SVU spoof that aired at this year’s Emmys, where Swift appeared on screen saying: “Saccharide. Aries. From the Vineyard. North or South.” True to Swifty tradition, the internet spent days trying to anagram and decode every clue before the real announcement finally landed.
What we actually know about the song
“Patient Zero” releases digitally Friday, with acoustic and piano versions also available, each featuring their own alternate cover art. It’s available to preorder now, along with limited-edition CDs that ship October 13. Swift hasn’t confirmed whether this is a standalone release or a lead single pointing toward something bigger, but given her track record, don’t be surprised if this is just the first domino.
The timing is not a coincidence
This marks Swift’s first release since “I Knew It, I Knew You,” her contribution to Toy Story 5 back in June, and her first original music drop since The Life of a Showgirl topped the Billboard 200 for 12 weeks and produced two No. 1 hits in “The Fate of Ophelia” and “Opalite.” It’s also landing just two days before Swift is set to be honored at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards; the same ceremony taking over the Peacock Theater right here in LA this weekend.
Swift is also planning to release the song’s official music video at the VMA’s which features Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell. Taylor directed it herself, Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki shot it, and she’s getting the VMAs’ brand-new Artist-Director Honors the same night, which makes her the show’s most-awarded artist ever (breaking her tie with Beyoncé.) No big deal.
The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore, including “Patient Zero” and the three additional tracks, arrives tomorrow Friday, September 25.
