Among the DC Universe’s slate of upcoming movies and television series, Mister Miracle is one of the more intriguing projects. Created by comic legend Jack Kirby, Scott Free/Mister Miracle is tied to the cosmic side of DC, with connections to the New Gods and the iconic supervillain Darkseid.
The DCU will approach Scott and his expansive lore in an animated series from Tom King, who has previously written comics featuring the character. Recently, King gave an update on the series’ status, revealing, among other things, that both Mister Miracle and Darkseid have been cast.
“We are in the middle of making this absolutely wonderful show as good as it possibly can be,” King explained. “I’m the showrunner. I am writing every single episode. I can confirm that Mister Miracle is a DCU show that has huge implications for the DCU at large. We are doing it right.”
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has previously discussed how the DCU will share actors for specific characters between live-action and animated projects, which makes King’s further statements even more impactful for the broader franchise. “We got to cast Darkseid,” King continued. “[We’re] finding the right people, finding the right designs and finding the way to tell this story.“
Recently, DC Studios revealed the synopsis for Mister Miracle, teasing both the title character and the cosmic stakes of his story. It reads:
No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick — and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation — the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe.
As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself.
Gunn himself commented on the series while commemorating the anniversary of Mister Miracle’s first comic appearance. “The world’s greatest escape artist made his debut on this day 55 years ago in 1971!” Gunn wrote on X. “Soon be seen in our DCU animated show.“
Interestingly, Gunn also addressed how the DCU’s approach to Darkseid will differ from that of the Snyderverse. He explained that Darkseid would not be a looming threat in the same way that Snyder approached the character, in part to avoid comparisons to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s iteration of Thanos.
“Using Darkseid as the big bad now is not necessarily the thing… because for a lot of reasons,” Gunn stated. “[Snyder] did it so cool in his way.” Though Snyder did not have the opportunity to see his vision for Darkseid through, he was teased as the ultimate evil of the DC Extended Universe and his search for the Anti-Life Equation is a key plot point of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Delving into the worlds of New Genesis and Apokolips will give the DCU a different entry point to Darkseid’s story and will likely help this iteration stand out, even if he will likely have the same motive.
Despite King’s update and Gunn’s affirmation that Darkseid is coming to the DCU, no formal cast announcements have been made. Additionally, Mister Miracle is still in development with no listed release date.
