The End Of Oak Street Can Finally Start A New Era For Dinosaur Movies

Dinosaurs and the silver screen seem like a match made in heaven. Kids are often fascinated by prehistoric creatures, and the film industry has already proven that they can be the centerpiece of titles in multiple genres. Dinosaurs are the perfect fit for fantasy or action movies, but can even fit into horror. Naturally, audiences immediately think of Jurassic Park when they talk about dinosaur movies, but The End of Oak Street has proven to be another worthwhile entry into the genre.

Outside Spielberg’s 1993 classic and the rest of the Jurassic Park franchise, dinosaurs are strangely absent from mainstream cinema. There are obvious reasons for this. Special effects are always improving, and it may take an exceptionally high budget to bring dinosaurs to life convincingly enough for a general audience. A dinosaur project could also be a major gamble on that front, as while viewers always show up for Jurassic Park, a studio may ask how much of that is on brand recognition.

Dinosaurs aren’t completely extinct elsewhere, though they are absolutely a rarity. Several kids’ movies feature dinosaurs, like Disney’s The Good Dinosaur. We also got a sci-fi adventure with a prehistoric twist in 2023 with Adam Driver’s 65. Beyond those and more obscure B-movies like The Dinosaur Project, we don’t see enough historic carnivores on the silver screen, but The End of Oak Street may be about to change that.

There Aren’t Enough Major Dinosaur Movies Outside The Jurassic Park/World Franchise

While Jurassic Park and Jurassic World are household names, they are also part of the only mainstream film franchise focusing on dinosaurs. Most other movies exploring similar themes are standalone projects. We’ve already mentioned The Good Dinosaur and 65. 2025’s Primitive War is a more recent example, and is an Australian title offering a wild blend of war and prehistoric creatures. It’s a fun survival horror title, though arguably a B-movie general audiences are less familiar with.

Interestingly, movie studios are far more willing to make films about general monsters than dinosaurs. Godzilla is adored worldwide, and countless titles focus on strange creatures, from Love and Monsters to Cloverfield. Even the latest Jurassic World titles add their own fictional hybrid monsters, a decision that has proven divisive among fans for years.

Dinosaur movies find themselves in a similar situation to pirate films, where they should arguably be more popular, yet a single franchise seems to govern them. With dinosaur movies specifically, it seems no other production house has cracked the code to make a successful franchise. The prehistoric theme park angle isn’t the only way to make dinosaurs interesting, but time will tell if The End of Oak Street inspires any fresh ideas.

The End Of Oak Street Should Lead To More Big Dinosaur Movies

The End of Oak Street could potentially pave the way for new dinosaur movies, though it will likely depend on box office performance and whether it resonates with fans and critics. The movie boasts an all-star cast, including Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor. Some moviegoers are already speculating a link between Cloverfield and The End of Oak Street as J.J Abrams produced both titles. Early reactions to The End of Oak Street are reportedly positive, though it’s important to note that glowing reviews don’t necessarily equate to audiences showing up in theaters.

If The End of Oak Street is the dinosaur-themed summer blockbuster audiences are hoping for, it may just spark other titles to follow suit in the future, or even a sequel. It’s no secret that dinosaur movies outside the Jurassic Park franchise have mostly performed unremarkably at the box office, even if they turned a profit. Walking with Dinosaurs notably underperformed in 2013 even with a TV series backing it up, though comparing these projects to the juggernaut that is Jurassic Park may be unfair.

Even the most ardent Jurassic Park and Jurassic World fans may admit that the franchise is lighter on original ideas than it used to be. If The End of Oak Street is successful, it could rejuvenate interest in dinosaurs or encourage studios to explore fresh ways to include them in their stories.
