HBO’s The Last of Us is gearing up for its next chapter, and it looks like the series has just brought in another powerhouse performer.
As production on Season 3 prepares to kick off later this year, a new report says Patrick Wilson has joined the cast in a key role that could play a major part in the emotional backbone of the upcoming season.
The casting is a pretty exciting fit, especially considering Wilson’s long history with genre storytelling.
According to The InSneider, the The Last of Us series has cast Wilson in a significant role. While HBO hasn’t officially confirmed the character yet, the expectation is that Wilson will portray Jerry Anderson, the father of Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever.
Fans of the game know how important that character is to the larger narrative. Jerry Anderson was the surgeon Joel killed during the Season 1 finale while rescuing Ellie. That moment sent shockwaves through the story and ultimately fuels Abby’s motivations moving forward.
With Season 3 shifting its focus to Abby’s perspective, exploring her past and the time she spent with her father before his death, Wilson’s role could become a major emotional anchor for the series.
The upcoming season arrives after the shocking loss of Joel Miller, played by Pedro Pascal, which leaves a big void in the story.
Bringing in an actor like Wilson makes a lot of sense as the show pivots to a new central dynamic. Reports suggest Wilson could appear across multiple episodes as Abby’s story unfolds through both present-day events and flashbacks.
The show has also made another casting adjustment recently. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. stepped into the role of Manny, replacing Danny Ramirez, who had previously played the part.
Wilson’s resume speaks for itself when it comes to genre entertainment. He’s known for his roles in Watchmen, The A-Team, and several films within The Conjuring and Insidious franchises.
He also played Ocean Master in Aquaman and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. On television, he’s appeared in projects such as A Gifted Man and Fargo, giving him plenty of experience navigating both dramatic and supernatural storytelling.
While fans are still debating how long HBO plans to keep the series running, it sounds like the creative team already has an endpoint in mind. HBO CEO Casey Bloys recently addressed speculation about a fourth season and suggested the story may wrap up sooner rather than later, saying:
“It certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.”
Another notable shift heading into Season 3 involves the creative leadership. Co-showrunner Neil Druckmann, who helped guide the first two seasons alongside Craig Mazin, has stepped away from the day-to-day duties of the show. Mazin will now run the series solo moving forward.
Druckmann explained that the decision came down to juggling a growing list of responsibilities across Naughty Dog and PlayStation. He said it’s “quite challenging to be as involved as a co-showrunner on Season 1 and Season 2, while running a studio and working and directing and writing a game,”
He continued: “I looked at what’s in front of me, what would the next season might look like, and with all the various Last of Us things I’m working on – not just the show – with all the various games I’m working on,”
And added: “The biggest one that takes up most of my time is Intergalactic: The Heretic Profit, our next big IP for Naughty Dog and PlayStation. It felt like I could better serve all of my responsibilities if I stayed at a higher level.”
With production scheduled to begin later this year and Abby’s story ready to take the spotlight, Season 3 of The Last of Us is shaping up to look very different from what came before. Bringing someone like Wilson into the mix hints at a deeper dive into the emotional fallout of Joel’s actions and how those consequences ripple through the world.
If everything stays on track, fans will likely see The Last of Us Season 3 premiere on HBO sometime in 2027.
