The Smashing Machine’s Failure Proves It’s Too Late For The Rock To Be A Dramatic Actor

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson made his big dramatic debut in The Smashing Machine, but the movie’s financial failure proves it was way too late for such a big career change. The Rock is a Hollywood star who needs little introduction, and the wrestler-turned-actor has been a box office juggernaut for decades. However, he’s also been pigeonholed into certain roles.

The sports biopic, The Smashing Machine, was supposed to be Johnson’s pivot towards dramatic parts, but that didn’t work out. The film was a box office disaster, grossing $30 million less than its reported production budget (via Box Office Mojo). While it might have been a cathartic experience for Johnson, the flop says a lot about the actor’s career.

Why The Rock’s Dramatic Role Failed & Others Didn’t

The Rock isn’t the first actor to try something different, and plenty of typecast stars have broken out in more dramatic or comedic parts. Jim Carrey famously starred in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and gave an all-time classic performance. However, what sets The Rock apart is the passage of time, and The Smashing Machine just came too late.

When Carrey made his dramatic turn, he was a decade into his movie star career. Fans had grown accustomed to his humor, but it certainly wasn’t overdone. On the other hand, The Rock has been a generic action star for nearly 25 years, with little variation. If The Smashing Machine was made 10 years ago, the story might be different.

In an era of increasingly volatile box offices, The Smashing Machine was already behind the eight-ball. The movie had nothing to appeal to Johnson’s fans, while more artistically-inclined cinephiles were likely turned off by the presence of an action star in a drama. This was shown in the financial numbers, and the movie fell into limbo.

It was no secret that The Smashing Machine was The Rock’s dramatic turn, but that wasn’t enough to get audience to flock to theaters. Since the entire movie hinged on Johnson’s dramatic performance, its rejection is proof that moviegoers just didn’t want to see it after two-and-a-half decades of safe Rock fare.

It’s important to note that the failure of The Rock’s dramatic turn isn’t dependent on the quality of his performance. In fact, Johnson showed just how strong his acting skills have become when playing Mark Kerr. The effusive praise that Johnson received for his performance was not misplaced, and he showed the skills he possessed all along.

The Smashing Machine Wasn’t Different Enough

Another reason that The Rock’s dramatic turn failed was that there was no element of surprise. The marketing for the film made it clear that Rocky was not playing his usual character, so audiences got the whole story before they even saw the movie. On top of that, The Rock playing an MMA fighter was just too close to reality.

The Rock’s time as a wrestler was beloved, and he’s maintained the aura of a larger-than-life superstar ever since. Therefore, a role involving combat sports wasn’t all that unique. Had The Rock played a character wholly unlike himself, it could have been better recieved. The Smashing Machine was familiar, which was its ultimate downfall.
