Timothée Chalamet made it into The View‘s “Hot Topics” segment over his remarks about opera and ballet.
During a town hall alongside Matthew McConaughey, the Oscar-nominated actor said that he was conflicted about advocating for movies in theaters and noted that he didn’t want to be working in ballet or opera “where it’s like, ‘Keep this thing alive even though no one cares about this thing anymore.’”
Sarah Haines reminded viewers and the co-hosts at the table that Chalamet’s grandmother, mother, and sister participated in the New York City Ballet, joking, “This seems like a family issue.”
Sunny Hostin said she felt “offended” and “disappointed” by Chalamet’s comments as a member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem, a classical ballet, Black troupe, adding, “I didn’t realize that he was that vapid, and that shallow.”
Whoopi Goldberg took issue with Chalamet taking a shot at the arts while trying to make light of it saying he probably lost 14 cents after making those remarks.
“You come from a dance family. And so, when you crap on somebody else’s art form, it doesn’t feel good,” Goldberg said. “It doesn’t feel good to see, and you probably didn’t realize that until you said, ‘Oh, I’m in trouble.’ But then you compounded it, and said ’14 cents.’ No, when people get mad, it’ll be a lot more than 14 cents. So be careful. I’m just saying, be careful, boy.”
Golberg noted that to her, Chalamet is a “boy to me,” adding a “no disrespect” to her comment as he did during the town hall after dissing ballet and opera.
“And really, don’t apologize when you’ve insulted, because it doesn’t sound right. You can’t say ‘Oh, this is dumb and no disrespect for’ — that’s absolute disrespect!” Whoopi added.
