Tom Cruise‘s upcoming horror movie Deeper is facing potential budgetary issues that could see the film’s release date in jeopardy.
What is the rumored budget issues for Deeper?
According to a new report from Puck, Warner Bros. has reportedly told Cruise and his representation at CAA that the budget for Deeper is “not penciling out.” The rumored budget Cruise was asking for for the movie is $275 million, while Warner Bros. studio chiefs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy reportedly told Cruise that the ceiling for the movie is $230 million.
This could put the film’s status at WB in jeopardy. Puck’s report notes that Cruise had no reason to think WB would turn down the film. However, his team is now “scrambling” to set up the movie elsewhere, with Universal potentially listed as another studio.
The report also notes that Cruise is “out of love” with Warner Bros., despite their working relationship on Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s upcoming movie, and their recent overall deal with Cruise in 2024.
The movie “follows an astronaut who encounters a terrifying force while on a deep dive into a never-before-explored trench,” and was originally written by Max Landis, but a new script is reported to be being written by Christopher McQuarrie, Cruise’s longtime friend and creative partner.
Deeper will mark yet another collaboration between Cruise and Liman. The director previously worked with Cruise on the sci-fi cult classic Edge of Tomorrow, as well as American Made. Reports also suggest that Liman, Cruise, and McQuarrie are working together on a narrative film set in space and made with the cooperation of NASA, although there’s been no big updates on that as of yet.
