The unauthorized biopic “The Apprentice” drops first look scenes of Sebastian Stan as a young Donald Trump.
The film is directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman. The cast includes Sebastian Stan, Jeremy Strong, Maria Bakalova, and Martin Donovan. It debuted earlier this year at Cannes Film Festival to positive feedback and made its U.S. premiere this past Saturday at the Telluride Film Festival. Director Abbasi shared with the audience ““at least for myself … this is not a political hit piece. This is a mirror…and it is intended to show you, as the mirrors do, an image of yourselves, not you per-se, but you as community.”
About the film: A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his name as a hungry scion of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé—someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.
Still there has been controversy surrounding the unauthorized biopic since Cannes and the filmmakers even set up a Kickstarter to help fund the film’s expanded release and for expected legal fees should they be sued (after threats were made by Trump’s legal team.)
The film drops October 11th just weeks before the upcoming presidential election.
