Nicolas Cage has shared an unfortunate update on the status of True Detective Season 5. The actor was reportedly in talks to star in HBO’s prestige TV show, but no updates have emerged since.
What did Nicolas Cage say about True Detective Season 5?
It was reported in August 2025 that Nicolas Cage was in talks to star in HBO’s True Detective Season 5, but there haven’t been many updates since then. When asked about it recently, Cage said he has “no idea” if it’s happening and that he hasn’t yet officially signed onto anything.
“I think they’re working on the material, but I haven’t heard about it in quite some time,” said Cage in a new interview with Variety. “I’m not signed on to anything; we’re just talking. I like Issa López a lot, and would be thrilled to work with her, but nothing is concrete. And I’ve never seen the first season of True Detective, but I’ve heard great things.”
According to recent reports, True Detective Season 5 will take place in the Jamaica Bay area of New York City. Production was planned to start in 2026, though it remains unclear when the show will return to HBO.

True Detective Season 1 starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as the detective duo. The anthology series has since seen the likes of Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Jodie Foster, and Kali Reis lead the show.
HBO’s True Detective has earned over 41 Primetime Emmy nominations since its debut and won six awards. Despite stumbling in the second season, most of the series has been widely acclaimed. The most recent season, True Detective: Night Country, holds a 93% score on Rotten Tomatoes and earned more than 19 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations, making it the most acclaimed in the franchise.
Before True Detective, Cage will lead his first TV role in Spider-Noir, streaming now on MGM+ and Prime Video.
