George A. Romero’s zombie saga is getting one final trip into the land of the dead. Based on a treatment written by horror legend George A. Romero before his death, Twilight of the Dead has officially wrapped filming.
The upcoming zombie movie is being positioned as the final chapter in the filmmaker’s hugely influential series, bringing Romero’s undead world back to theaters with a new story and a pretty great collection of horror talent involved.
Kate Beckinsale, best known to genre fans for Underworld, leads the film alongside Betty Gabriel (Get Out). The cast also includes Abigail London and John D. Hickman (Becky).
The story takes place on a decimated Earth where the remaining pockets of humanity find themselves caught between warring factions while the undead continue to evolve. That sounds like fitting territory for a Romero story, where zombies were rarely the only threat people had to worry about.
The Paz Brothers, the filmmaking team behind Jeruzalem and The Golem, directed Twilight of the Dead, and they clearly understand the significance of taking on a project carrying Romero’s name.
“Stepping into Romero’s world is the ultimate privilege for any genre filmmaker,” the Paz Brothers said in a joint statement. “This is more than a continuation; it’s a responsibility. We are committed to honoring his voice while delivering a visceral, terrifying, impactful experience for today’s audience that resonates beyond the screen.”
There’s another major Romero connection involved with the production. Legendary makeup effects artist Greg Nicotero is handling the makeup FX for the film.
Nicotero’s relationship with Romero goes back decades. He worked on several of the director’s films, including Day of the Dead, Monkey Shines, and Land of the Dead, before becoming one of the defining creative forces behind The Walking Dead. Having him involved gives Twilight of the Dead a direct creative link to Romero’s earlier work.
Romero launched his zombie universe with Night of the Living Dead in 1968 and continued exploring it across several films throughout his career. While each entry had its own characters and circumstances, his movies regularly used the undead as a way to examine humanity, social conflict, consumer culture, power, and our remarkable ability to make an already terrible situation even worse.
Magenta Light Studios, the company behind Strange Darling and Deep Water, has secured the North American rights to the film and plans to release Twilight of the Dead theatrically in the United States and Canada.
With filming now complete, Romero fans are one big step closer to finally seeing the story he left behind. There’s a lot riding on Twilight of the Dead, especially when it’s being presented as the conclusion to one of horror’s most important franchises.
Now we just need to see whether Twilight of the Dead can give Romero’s zombie legacy the finale it deserves.
