“You will leave with more soul than you showed up with, guaranteed.” Ain’t that the truth! Now playing in theaters is the excellent Texas film The Rivals of Amziah King, directed by filmmaker Andrew Patterson (of The Vast of Night). As part of the final promotion, poster archive site Posteritati has debuted a video featuring of actor Matthew McConaughey and director Andrew Patterson visit their office to discuss posters. It ends with them talking about the design of the official poster for Amziah King (designed by artist Rory Martinez) but the rest of the time they discuss some of their favorite classic movie posters. Which is actually pretty cool to see cause McConaughey is also in there geeking out about all this artwork. The other posters they feature are for Spielberg’s Jaws, 1933’s King Kong, Leone’s For a Few Dollars More, PTA’s One Battle After Another. This is the second video so far from Posteritati borrowing the Criterion Closet concept – the first was with My Father’s Shadow director Akinola Davies Jr. I’m really enjoying these videos more & more, because it’s not just about new poster artwork, it’s about what makes the classic designs so timeless and evocative. And it’s exciting to see them discussed & featured all these years later. View the video below.
You can watch the official trailer for Patterson’s The Rivals of Amziah King film right here for more footage.
Deep within the backwoods of rural Oklahoma, charismatic and musically gifted Amziah King (starring Matthew McConaughey) herds a bluegrass-playing band of misfits while overseeing the premier honey-making operation in town. When Amziah’s estranged foster daughter Kateri (with newcomer Angelina LookingGlass) unexpectedly returns, Amziah leaps at the possibility to renew the connection and create a family business. But the honey game is ruthless, and Amziah’s rivals threaten to destroy everything he has built. The Rivals of Amziah King is directed by acclaimed American indie filmmaker Andrew Patterson, director of the sci-fi film The Vast of Night previously. The screenplay is written by James Montague and Andrew Patterson. Produced by Jeffrey Clifford, Will Greenfield, Michael Heimler, David Heyman, James Montague, Andrew Patterson, Teddy Schwarzman. This initially premiered at the 2025 SXSW Film Festival last year. Black Bear debuts Patterson’s The Rivals of Amziah King in select US theaters starting on August 14th, 2026 later this summer – expanding wide the next week after. Now playing in theaters. Looks good?
