Whisper It, But Firefly Ending After 1 Season Was Kind Of Perfect

The short-lived Firefly has become a cult classic, widely considered one of television’s most devastating shows that were canceled too soon. Its 14 episodes were followed by a feature film, comics, and novels, but none of them provided the same satisfaction that a continuation of the TV series would have.

At the end of its run, Firefly had left many mysteries unsolved and promising stories untold. The ongoing saga with River lacked closure, while no insight had been offered into Shepherd Book’s character and origins, arguably the show’s most mysterious and intriguing figure.

There was no shortage of material for future Firefly seasons to explore, and creator Joss Whedon had a multi-season plan mapped out, which made its cancellation all the more saddening. Yet, even though it wasn’t meant to be the end, “Objects in Space,” which proved to be Firefly‘s last episode, actually served as a great series finale.

Throughout its run, Firefly had an endearing whimsy to it. Its world and its themes had a heaviness that gave the show its stakes, but that darkness generally took a back seat to the fun, exciting adventures of Serenity and her crew. “Objects in Space,” though, suddenly brought that darkness front and center, fulfilling the show’s early promises of the true horrors that lurked in the darkness of space.

Firefly’s “Objects In Space” Had The Intensity Of A Series Finale

“Objects in Space” had an intensity that stands out starkly against Firefly‘s other episodes. The arrival of the new, unexpected foe, Jubal Early, felt as shocking to viewers as it did to the characters, and his eerie, offbeat demeanor gave the entire episode an off-kilter feel that created real uncertainty, arguably for the first time in the show’s run, about whether Serenity’s crew would make it out of this situation.

From the beginning, Firefly teased the constant threat of Reavers, an animalistic group of people who have gone violently mad on the fringes of space civilization. In the pilot episode, Zoe established that, if encountered, Reavers would “rape us to death, eat our flesh, and sew our skin into their clothing. And if we’re very, very lucky, they’ll do it in that order.“

What’s Going On With The Firefly Revival Series?

After years of speculation, an animated Firefly revival is finally in early development, but will this show ever actually see the light of day?

This horrific image of Reavers was made even more ominous by the fact that Serenity’s crew never actually encountered Reavers face to face throughout Firefly’s run. Over 13 episodes, the fearsome nature of the group was emphasized to an almost legendary degree, building a level of suspense that demanded a payoff amidst Firefly‘s otherwise lighthearted tone.

“Objects in Space”‘s Jubal Early wasn’t a Reaver, but rather a bounty hunter intent on capturing River. Nonetheless, his deeply unsettling demeanor and cold, calculating combat capability evoked a similar fear to that of the infamous Reavers. After matter-of-factly threatening to assault Kaylee, Early quickly subdued Serenity’s entire crew with swift efficiency and a conversational style that was just a bit off.

For the first time, it seemed that Captain Reynolds may have met his match, and the ticking time bomb of River’s presence on Serenity may finally go off. It was a confrontation worthy of a series finale, even if it ultimately didn’t wrap up all of Firefly‘s unresolved storylines.

Uncertainty Was Part Of What Made Firefly Great

For both its characters and its viewers, Firefly was full of surprises. Every episode was a new, unexpected adventure, and that was part of the show’s charm. The crew handled everything that was thrown their way with a scrappy, seat-of-their-pants attitude that made them uniquely fun to watch. Had the show given them too many answers, even in its final moments, Firefly would have lost some of its charm.

Even so, “Objects in Space” did offer some emotional closure, allowing it to feel like a true conclusion. The episode began with the most honest conversation the Serenity crew had ever had about River. The possibility of abandoning her and Simon was finally acknowledged out loud, giving Mal’s ultimate decision to protect them more weight than in previous episodes.

Ultimately, Firefly ended with questions unanswered and characters largely in the same place they began, but it was always a show more focused on the journey than the destination. Though the franchise continued to expand after its conclusion, the show’s ending was fitting. After facing their most trying test yet, it was enough to know that the Firefly team was going to find a job and keep flying.
