William Orbit, the Grammy-winning producer and electronic music pioneer whose adventurous approach reshaped the sound of late ’90s pop and alternative rock through landmark collaborations with Madonna, Blur, All Saints, U2 and countless others, has died at 69. Orbit passed away at his U.K. home on July 23, according to a statement from his family and friends. No cause of death was disclosed.

Although he’d spent years building a reputation in electronic music through projects like Torch Song, Bassomatic and his Strange Cargo series, Orbit became one of pop’s most sought-after producers after helping craft Madonna’s transformative 1998 masterpiece Ray of Light. Blending ambient textures, trip-hop, techno and drum-and-bass into a new sonic language for mainstream pop, Orbit co-created an album that revitalized Madonna’s career while earning multiple Grammys and influencing a generation of producers.

The artists struck gold again in 1999 with “Beautiful Stranger,” which was featured on the Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me soundtrack. Their later collaborations included Madonna’s 2000 album Music and 2012 LP MDNA, on which he produced six songs.

His restless curiosity extended well beyond one defining collaboration. Orbit produced Blur’s experimental 1999 album 13, worked on U2’s The Best of 1990–2000 sessions, steered All Saints to chart-topping success with “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee” and lent his cinematic touch to artists ranging from Beth Orton and Pink to Katie Melua. As a solo artist, he also found crossover success with Pieces in a Modern Style, whose reimagining of Samuel Barber’s “Adagio for Strings” became an unlikely electronic anthem.

Madonna once described Orbit as “a complete madman genius,” recalling how he transformed the rough musical ideas she brought into the studio into expansive, genre-defying compositions. Earlier this year, Orbit reflected on their partnership with characteristic affection, saying, “I will always love that woman. For real. She made my career.”

Speaking to SPIN in 1998 about Ray of Light, Madonna elaborated, “I let William play mad professor. He comes from a very experimental, cutting-edge sort of place — he’s not a trained musician, and I’m used to working with classically trained musicians — but I knew that’s where I wanted to go, so I took a lot more risks. Oftentimes the creative process was frustrating because I wasn’t used to it; it took a lot longer than usual to make this record. But I realize now that I need that time to get where I was going.”

Born William Wainwright in north London in 1956, Orbit left school at 16 and immersed himself in the city’s post-punk underground. His productions often balanced emotional intimacy with technological experimentation, bringing underground electronic music into conversation with chart pop without sacrificing either’s identity.

In recent years, Orbit spoke candidly about overcoming substance abuse and a psychotic episode that interrupted his career before returning to music. His final studio album, The Painter, arrived in 2022.

“We were fortunate enough to work with him on many occasions and on many songs. In the studio, he made me feel so confident, comfortable and always brought the best out in me,” All Saints member Nicole Appleton wrote in tribute. “He was a treasure in the music industry and we had the most amazing times in the studio and socially. We will forever celebrate him as a music icon. Sending love to all his friends and family.”
