“I’m an innocent man.” HBO Max has revealed the main official trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled When a Witness Recants, retelling the story of three teenagers sent to prison for a murder – only to be found wrongfully convinced after 36 years in prison. This first premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year to many superb reviews, with stops at Full Frame, Hot Docs, DC/DOX, and many other fests during the year. A 1983 Baltimore school murder led to 3 teens’ wrongful imprisonment for 36 years. Rediscovering the story as an adult, acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, who grew up in the same West Baltimore community, learns the truth about the case of these three boys & comes to see it as both a crucial turning point for Baltimore’s tight knit Black community and a glaring example of a broader national crisis of racially charged police misconduct. Using animated sequences, insight from the major players, and footage from depositions taken in 2022, the film details how coerced confessions & false testimony led to the convictions, revealing an egregious abuse of authority and prosecutorial malfeasance. An examination of how this case affected the accused, witnesses and their community. Directed by doc master filmmaker Dawn Porter as yet another of her latest hard-hitting stories about injustice and the truth. Don’t skip over this one.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Dawn Porter’s doc film When a Witness Recants, from YouTube:
In 1983, noted author Ta-Nehisi Coates remembers learning that a 14-year old boy was murdered in the corridor of his Baltimore middle school. Revisiting the case as an adult, he learns the truth about the 3 innocent teenagers who were convicted & sentenced to life. After 36 years in prison, it was revealed that false testimony led to their imprisonment. This documentary explores the collateral damage the handling of this case had on the community, the wrongfully accused, and the young witnesses pressured to betray them. Adapted from a New Yorker article by Jennifer Gonnerman, bringing their story to life including a devastating confrontation with one of the witnesses, whose false testimony led to their imprisonment and whose recantation as part of a reinvestigation of the case ultimately led to their release on November 22, 2019, after 36 years behind bars. With raw emotion, the four men, now in their 50s and all survivors of a flawed criminal justice system, tell their stories as they seek to rebuild their lives in the wake of lost time.
When a Witness Recants is directed by acclaimed doc filmmaker Dawn Porter, director of Gideon’s Army, Trapped, Bobby Kennedy for President, John Lewis: Good Trouble, The Way I See It, Rise Again: Tulsa and the Red Summer, Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court, The Sing Sing Chronicles, Luther: Never Too Much previously. Produced by Dawn Porter, Jennifer Oko, Miriam Weintraub. A Maceo-Lyn Production with Trilogy Films & Sony Pictures TV-Nonfiction. Executive produced by Ta-Nehisi Coates, Kenyatta Matthews, Kamilah Forbes, Eli Holzman, Aaron Saidman, Lisa Heller, Sara Rodriguez, Jennifer Gonnerman, and Nancy Abraham. This premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. HBO Max debuts Porter’s When a Witness Recants doc streaming on HBO Max starting November 17th, 2026.
