After signing to revered label 4AD earlier this year, YHWH Nailgun have been teasing songs from the follow-up to last year’s 45 Pounds, including at Kilby Block Party and Warm Cool Dreams. However, if you were at C2C Festival in NYC last month, the experimental Brooklyn group debuted their new 11-minute album, Magazine, out next week (June 11), in full and then left the stage.
Just like 45 Pounds, the project was produced by their guitarist Saguiv Rosenstock but takes an exponentially different approach, forgoing the rototoms that defined their debut’s sharp and unpredictable barrage. You can see for yourself below, as the band just played three Magazine songs — “Give Blood,” “Ballerina,” and “Hips on a Wheel” — on The Adam Friedland Show. It’s just as immediate and bruisingly original, but steeped in a brand-new feeling. Like drummer Sam Pickard told AP last spring, “All of us are just focused on making the song and not hanging around too long on any one thing musically. Not trying to milk it too much, just be direct.”
