There’s a good chance you’ve heard the title and done a double take. Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, the new film from writer-director Bassam Tariq, opens in select theaters this Friday, September 25, before expanding wide in October. Based on the early reviews, this is one worth actually planning around rather than catching whenever it lands on streaming.
Two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman trying to hold together work, faith and fatherhood. When his wife dies, he’s forced into a desperate journey across Houston to protect his kids, all while the forces closing in around him start to unravel the beliefs he’s built his life on. It’s a premise that sounds like a straightforward action thriller on paper, but critics are describing something considerably more layered, closer to a meditative family drama and a serious exploration of Islamic faith than a shoot-em-up, with bursts of genuinely intense action woven throughout.
Here’s the detail that’s fueling a lot of the pre-release buzz: this film exists largely because Marvel’s long-stalled Blade reboot didn’t. Ali and Tariq were originally developing that project together before it fell apart, and rather than let that collaborative groundwork go to waste, they built something entirely their own out of it.
John Cho, Giancarlo Esposito, Tramell Tillman, Abubakr Ali, Tiffany Boone, Laith Nakli and newcomer Adia round out the ensemble, with Esposito playing Latif’s disapproving father-in-law and Tillman playing his more clean-cut, suburban brother. The film is shot by Katelin Arizmendi, edited by Cam McLauchlin, and scored by Son Lux.
Check this one out in theaters this Friday, September 25th.
