While anime is a flexible medium, it’s notoriously fickle when it comes to horror, often veering into horror-adjacent topics but not fully committing. With horror providing a fascinating spectrum through which viewers can feel dread, terror, or disturbed, anime has had numerous opportunities to strike that balance over the years.
Some horror anime are dark to the point of being gratuitous, but that’s part of their charm. They’re more concise than the usual offerings due to their niche nature, lasting one to two cours each, providing a perfect opportunity for a binge. Coming up to Halloween, any of these dark horror anime would be a perfect addition to the watchlist.
Higurashi: When They Cry
Don’t be deceived by this anime: Higuracshi: When They Cry is a sinister adaptation of its visual novel source material. Following Keiichi Maebara has he moves to the small village of Hinamizawa in 1983, Higurashi’s slice of life facade begins to slip as a horrifying secret unfolds. It’s a fantastically subversive psychological horror anime under the surface.
Beneath its immediate slice of life appeal, Higurashi’s sinister intent shines as the viewers pay close attention to the vibe changes among the story’s stars. The village’s people are clearly covering for strange rituals going on, and as more people mysteriously disappear, a wave of paranoia and dread will sweep the viewers away with this anime’s chilling narrative.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls
Based off a series of grotesque games, Corpse Party: Tortured Souls is about as gratuitous as anime violence can get as it creatively eviscerates its cast for the viewers’ displeasure. There are numerous anime adaptations, of which Tortured Souls’ OVA collection is the most commonly recommended.
Corpse Party: Tortured Souls follow the students of Kisaragi Academy where its classmates perform a friendship charm ritual as a sendoff for a friend about to transfer. However, they are then immediately transported to the Heavenly Host Elementary School beneath Kisaragi’s foundations, where vengeful spirits reside. It’s a meat grinder of an anime, promising emotional damage to its viewers.
Elfen Lied
An example of how dark fantasy genres blended with sci-fi can generate fascinating horror and social commentary, Elfen Lied holds a mirror up to humanity to show their cruel tendencies. As an adaptation of the hit Weekly Young Jump manga, studio Arms’ anime presents an alternate ending to the manga’s 3-year run in just one season.
In a world where humanity feels threatened by the humanoid Diclonii, mutants with horns and strange powers feared as the destruction of mankind, Elfen Lied follows Lucy, a Diclonius. Lucy escapes from her inhumane confinement as a research subject, where the story begins. The controversial anime juxtaposes Lucy’s predicament with the conspiratorial and cruel tendencies toward prejudice humanity can exhibit.
Another
An excellent supernatural mystery by P.A. Works, Another is not a mere festival of gore and shock value, weaving a fascinating story in its 12 episodes. However, at its core, its gruesome nature and supernatural elements make Another a stellar horror anime recommendation. Yomiyama Middle School’s class 3-3 is the site of an infamous death from the past.
26 years later in 1998, Kouichi Sakakibara joins the class and quickly meets Mei Misaki, after which a series of strange and horrifying deaths engulfs the students and their families. Looking to stop this, Kouichi and Mei set out to find the truth about 3-3’s past.
Ghost Hunt
For the shojo fans, this is a stellar example of how the demographic defies expectations similarly to MAPPA’s Banana Fish, serving up a chilling narrative but with some romantic twists. Ghost Hunt is also a stellar example of J.C.Staff’s strong output when not saddled with an anticipated anime followup and its toxic fandom.
Ghost Hunt follows Mai Taniyama, a girl who is revealed to have a Sixth Sense, and falls in with the Shibuya Psychic Research Company and its manager, Kazuya Shibuya. While it begins as a monster-of-the-week treatment, Ghost Hunt’s engrossing narrative takes on darker twists as the series proceeds, although diehard fans would have preferred its 25-episode run to be longer.
Boogiepop Phantom
Any anime from Madhouse has a strong likelihood of being a good recommendation to curious fans, and Boogiepop Phantom is no exception. It’s loved for its soundtrack and overall sound design, but its visuals are equally deliberate in depicting its psychological horror elements by reflecting its characters’ emotional states.
Naturally, Boogiepop Phantom is an idiosyncratic affair that endeavors to set itself apart from the pack. With killings being tied to a mysterious shinigami known as Boogiepop, the anime’s story is told through the lives of those affected across the same timeframe. Boogiepop Phantom gives fans pieces of the truth that only truly make sense once fully assembled.
Devilman Crybaby
Beyond being a somewhat excessive display of sex and violence, Devilman Crybaby is a critique of how humanity handles its fear, and how individuals confront and process trauma. Following Akira Fudo, the series is a bold recreation of Go Nagai’s Devilman manga that starts out bright and minimalist, only to grow hopelessly bleak by the end.
Perhaps one of Devilman Crybaby’s standout offerings as a horror anime is Science SARU’s virtuoso monster designs, with demonic creatures terrorizing an unsuspecting public. However, as Akira soon bears witness, humanity’s solution to the devil menace is far more destructive, bringing about an eschatological extinction event. Over the course of eight episodes, prepare to be mesmerized, horrified, and devastated.
Hell Girl
Something of a crowd-pleaser among horror crowds, Hell Girl is a dark horror anime centered around vengeance, enabling people to use the titular Hell Girl to send others to a fate of eternal torment. Studio Deen’s rendition of this original anime brings the formula to life.
Defended by its fans despite its grim premise, this anime offers a bleak answer for those who wish to inflict harm upon their abusers. Yet, the anime brings the whole picture to light when this revenge is granted, with those sent to Hell often leaving a ripple effect inflicting pain and suffering on those left behind.
School-Live!
Perhaps one of anime and Japanese pop culture’s most interesting twists on the genre beyond J-horror tropes is that of psychological horror creeping within the facade of an innocent school setting. Animated by Lerche, School-Live! adapts Norimitsu Kaihō’s chilling manga telling the horrifying truth under the wholesome appearance.
Yuki Takeya is a member of the Megurigaoka Private High School’s School Living Club, bound by club rules never to step outside school grounds. However, this is all a delusion of Yuki’s so as to cope with the trauma of the much darker reality. Without spoiling anything, this horror anime is a perfect Halloween binge with just 12 episodes.
The Summer Hikaru Died
A recent addition to horror anime’s catalog, The Summer Hikaru Died is far from the most gratuitous entry, but its uncanny and psychological elements show CyGamesPictures knows how to animate horror. The anime quickly left an impression on its Netflix audience, garnering a season 2 renewal.
Yoshiki Tsujinaka is the protagonist of this tale whose friend, Hikaru Indo, returns mysteriously after months of being missing. As Yoshiki discovers the truth, that Hikaru is dead and has been taken over by a strange eldritch creature, the real story begins. It’s fascinating and darkly beautiful, using horror twists on identity and grief to make the experience hit home.
