The Legend of Zelda really is a series like no other, with an unprecedented period of longevity and relevance at the very top of the industry. For 40 years now, Nintendo has been bringing us memorable experiences and some of the most enjoyable games to play that you’ll find anywhere, and that’s why so much is being celebrated around the 40th anniversary this year.
A big part of those celebrations has been taking a moment to remember the games that started it all, and there are plenty of excellent options to choose from. Arguably the best of the bunch is A Link to the Past, the third game in the series and still one of the most beloved to date. Now, a new set of releases is on the way that includes that game as part of its wider offering attached to the franchise, and you can pick it up for quite cheap if you’re in the right place at the right time.
In case you missed it, Japanese toy manufacturer Takara Tomy confirmed the upcoming release of The Legend of Zelda: Historical Charms collection. These essentially function as keyrings or small collectibles, and they can be claimed via gachapon machines in Japan. This obviously adds an element of gambling to proceedings, but given that you’re going to be paying around $2 per go, you shouldn’t need to spend too much money to pick up the one you want or, indeed, the entire collection.
There are 12 charms to collect in total, with each one shaped like the iconic Triforce from the series, as well as featuring a design from an individual game. The list of games memorialized in the new release is as follows:
- The Legend of Zelda
- Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link
- A Link to the Past
- Ocarina of Time
- Majora’s Mask
- The Wind Waker
- Twilight Princess
- Skyward Sword
- Link’s Awakening
- Breath of the Wild
- Tears of the Kingdom
- Echoes of Wisdom
They are set to launch this month, though obviously you will need to be in Japan to take advantage of them. That said, if you do happen to be over there any time soon, they should be pretty widely available and easy to find. There’s no news yet on whether they are planning for a release anywhere else, but it’s unlikely given the price. A Link to the Past is, of course, the game that truly defined the classic Zelda formula as we know it today, and is easily one of the greatest SNES games of all time.
Elsewhere, fans of The Legend of Zelda have so much to look forward to. The first big release that everyone will likely be playing is the Ocarina of Time Remake, which drops next month, just a couple of weeks before GTA VI. That leads into the arrival of the big budget feature film adaptation, which is set to show us the series in a whole new medium for the first time.
