Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black is getting a very different kind of 20th anniversary reissue: a live one. On Oct. 21, the Amy Winehouse Band will take over London’s Roundhouse for a one-night-only concert celebrating the landmark 2006 album in its entirety, with original producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi joining musical director Dale Davis, producers Paul O’Duffy and p*nut, and Darcus Beese OBE for an evening built around the beloved album’s songs.
The guest list is stacked. Ronson and Remi have hand-picked Baby Rose, Corinne Bailey Rae, FLO, Jessie Reyez, Jorja Smith, Lianne La Havas, Nia Smith, Sasha Keable, Skye Newman and Yebba to take on the late Winehouse’s material. “I’m honored to be asked to come celebrate Amy alongside Salaam and some amazing artists worthy of singing her songs,” Ronson said. “Doing justice to the legacy of Back to Black is the order of the night.”
Remi added, “Funny how time flies! I can’t believe it’s been 20 years already. I’m excited to see what these ladies bring to their versions of these songs we know and love.”
The concert arrives just days before the album’s official 20th anniversary on Oct. 27 — and follows a previously announced expanded reissue. UMR/Island’s Oct. 23 anniversary edition will add previously unreleased demos, rare B-sides and a complete Feb. 8, 2007, performance from Amsterdam’s Paradiso, along with previously unseen photographs by original album photographers Mischa Richter and Alex Lake and new liner notes from Ronson and Remi.
Back to Black transformed Winehouse from the critically acclaimed singer/songwriter behind 2003’s Frank into a global phenomenon. It has now sold more than 25 million copies worldwide, won five Grammys and peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. Its combination of vintage girl group textures, modern R&B and Winehouse’s brutally candid songwriting made it both an artifact of its era and something that has proved remarkably resistant to it.
The Roundhouse show will also be broadcast in late October as part of a night of programming devoted to Winehouse, with BBC Radio 2 airing the concert during Jo Whiley’s show on Oct. 26. For fans looking to get into the room, an artist presale is available to those who pre-order any 20th-anniversary edition of Back to Black through Winehouse’s official store by noon BST on Sept. 28. General ticket sales begin Oct. 1 at 10 a.m.
