It looks like Barbieland isn’t finished just yet. After months of speculation, multiple reports indicate Warner Bros. is actively working toward a sequel to 2023’s blockbuster Barbie.
According to recent reporting by the New York Times, director Greta Gerwig and co-writer Noah Baumbach have finally landed on an idea compelling enough to revisit the world they created—a major creative breakthrough after both repeatedly insisted they wouldn’t return without the right story.
But while the project appears to have taken its biggest step forward yet, it’s not officially a done deal.
Reports suggest Warner Bros. is now negotiating with Gerwig, Baumbach, producer-star Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling before the sequel can move into full production. Until those agreements are finalized, Barbie 2 remains in development rather than officially greenlit.
That distinction is important.
Following the original film’s unprecedented success, earning more than $1.4 billion worldwide and becoming one of the defining movies of the decade, both Gerwig and Robbie consistently resisted calls for a sequel. Instead, they maintained that Barbie had been conceived as a complete story and that they would only return if another chapter felt creatively justified.
That moment may have finally arrived. No plot details have been revealed, and Warner Bros. has yet to announce a release date or officially confirm the participation of Robbie or Gosling. However, industry insiders suggest the project’s momentum has shifted significantly now that Gerwig and Baumbach have reportedly developed a concept they believe is worth pursuing.
If the negotiations are successfully completed, audiences could once again find themselves back in Barbieland. For now, fans should view the sequel as closer than ever, but not yet official.
