If you’ve been keeping track of the comic book movie and TV landscape lately, it’s been one cancellation after another. Over at Marvel, Wonder Man season two isn’t happening, and Mahershala Ali has accepted that Blade is never going to materialize and walked away from it.
Now DC has its own disappointing update to throw on the pile. The long-in-development Booster Gold TV series has officially hit the end of the road.
The news comes from David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, who had been attached to write the series and was reportedly developing it for well over a year. Jenkins confirmed the project’s fate in a post on Threads, saying:
“My Booster Gold won’t be moving forward. Can’t improve on Mahershala’s lovely statement so I’ll just apply it here as well.”
That pretty much closes the book on the version of Booster Gold that fans had been hoping to see.
The series has been floating around since January 2023, when James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled the first wave of projects for their new DC Universe.
Alongside films like Superman and Supergirl, the duo also announced several TV series. Since then, fans have seen Creature Commandos debut in 2024, while Lanterns is set to arrive this August.
Booster Gold was one of the more intriguing announcements. The character has always felt like a perfect fit for television. A washed-up future celebrity who travels back in time to become a superhero for fame, only to gradually become something much more heroic, has all the ingredients for a fun, funny, and surprisingly heartfelt series.
It’s one of those concepts that could’ve stood apart from the darker corners of DC while still embracing the weirdness that makes the universe so entertaining.
For a while, it looked like things were moving in the right direction. Bringing Jenkins aboard as writer, and potentially showrunner, felt like a strong creative choice, especially given the humor and emotional depth he brought to Our Flag Means Death.
Things seemed encouraging as recently as April. At that point, Gunn had revealed that The Authority movie was no longer moving forward, but said that Booster Gold was still in development while the Themyscira-set series Paradise Lost remained in “extreme development.”
There are still plenty of DC projects on the schedule. Clayface is heading to theaters in October, John Cena recently wrapped another season of Peacemaker in 2025, and the “Elseworlds” side of DC continues with The Batman: Part II currently slated for 2028.
Other previously announced projects, including Andy Muschietti‘s The Brave and the Bold and the frequently delayed Sgt. Rock movie, remain somewhere in development.
Whether Booster Gold eventually returns with a different creative team or disappears for good remains to be seen. DC Studios declined to comment on the cancellation when contacted by Variety, so for now, all eyes will probably be on Gunn’s social media to see if he shares any additional details.
Personally, I think this is a disappointing loss for DC. Booster Gold always felt like one of the studio’s most entertaining concepts. It had the potential to deliver a superhero comedy with genuine heart while introducing one of DC’s most lovable underdogs to a much bigger audience. It could’ve been something refreshingly different in a crowded superhero landscape.
Unfortunately, the timing probably isn’t helping. With Supergirl bombing at the box office, I have a feeling Booster Gold won’t be the last DC project to get shelved as the studio reevaluates where the franchise goes from here.
