A few years ago, DC fans everywhere lost their minds when James Gunn and Peter Safran took over what is now known as DC Studios. The following wasn’t upset by the new overseers specifically, considering the former had landed numerous hits for Marvel that pointed to him doing the exact same for DC. Instead, they became upset after learning that Gunn and Safran’s new plan would re-route everything set up in the DCEU and start fresh. This came with the realization that actors who they’d gotten used to as their favorite superheroes would no longer don their capes and take off to save the world.
While folks were heartbroken over not receiving more movies that centered around the likes of Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry, aka Aquaman (although he’ll be taking on a much more villainous role in Supergirl), or Gal Gadot as Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, it was the actor who played Clark Kent that left much of the fandom reeling. For years, Henry Cavill had been known as the glasses-wearing newspaper employee by day and soaring hero by night, better known as Superman. But, under Safran and Gunn’s takeover, the face of The Justice League would get a lift.
After six films (two if you don’t count his brief cameos in The Flash and Black Adam), Cavill was seemingly ousted from his heroic position overnight when it was revealed that Safran and Gunn would be doing their own thing with the character. Their “own thing” turned out to be a massive box office hit when David Corenswet threw on the cape, slicked back his hair, and took to the sky in last summer’s Superman. And, unfortunately, we’ve got even worse news for fans of Cavill’s take on the iconic character as, at the end of March, his first film in the role, Man of Steel, will be soaring off HBO Max.

‘Man of Steel’ Solidified Henry Cavill as Superman
For so long, Christopher Reeve was the primary actor that audiences thought about when they imagined Superman — aside from Tom Welling, who played the character in the long-running series Smallville. Strapping on the boots was no small task for Cavill, but he quickly rose to the occasion with Man of Steel, grossing a staggering $670.1 million against its $258 million production budget by the time it exited cinemas. The film’s success allowed a new DC to emerge in cinemas and quickly built up a fandom that continues to today.
Head over to HBO Max before the end of the month to stream Man of Steel.
