Mark your calendars: the 78th Emmy Awards air Monday, September 14, live from the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live, and this year’s host is not who you’d typically expect. Mariska Hargitay — yes, Captain Olivia Benson herself — is stepping into the emcee role, and it’s the kind of casting choice that sounds unusual on paper but makes complete sense once you think about it for two seconds.
Hargitay isn’t a comedian or a late-night host, which is a real departure from the Kimmels, Colberts and Nate Bargatzes who’ve typically run the show. In fact, she’s the first woman to host the Emmys in 15 years, since Jane Lynch took the stage back in 2011. NBC and the Television Academy reportedly considered talent from both inside and outside the network before landing on Hargitay, and the timing lines up nicely. 2026 marks NBC’s 100th anniversary, and Hargitay is about as recognizable an NBC face as exists, thanks to more than 25 years on Law & Order: SVU.
Hargitay herself has said the offer caught her completely off guard. She got the call from NBCUniversal exec Pearlena Igbokwe while standing backstage during her Broadway debut in Every Brilliant Thing this summer, and her first thought, by her own account, was that she was being fired. “I thought she was kidding,” Hargitay told Today. Once it sank in, she called the opportunity “so incredibly honored,” noting the significance of being the first woman to lead the show in over a decade.
In her official statement, Hargitay tied the moment back to the thing she’s built her whole career on: “Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards — in the 100th birthday year of my beloved NBC — and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers.”
That instinct isn’t just talk, either. Beyond SVU, Hargitay founded the Joyful Heart Foundation, supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and she directed My Mom Jayne, a Cannes-premiering documentary about her mother, Jayne Mansfield.
As for what’s actually up for grabs this year: The Pitt leads the nominee pool with a massive 25 nods, with Hacks following behind. Voting for winners runs through August 26, so the race is still very much live heading into the ceremony.
