If you were to Google “Robert De Niro boxing movie,” you’d probably get an AI summary of the classic Raging Bull, directed by Martin Scorsese. Not only is it the best boxing film ever made, but it’s also among the best movies of all time. However, if you were to scroll down further, you’d realize that De Niro has also starred in two other movies about the famously cinematic sport. Neither left much of a mark, although one of them, Grudge Match, was heavily marketed as a grand face-off between De Niro and Sylvester Stallone. Stallone starred in Rocky, whose success famously helped make Raging Bull possible. The third boxing movie that De Niro starred in grossed only one-fourth of its reported budget and received mixed reviews.
The movie featured De Niro stepping into the role of a real-life boxing trainer named Ray Arcel, who trained the Panamanian fighter Roberto Durán, played by Édgar Ramírez. Incidentally, the film was released in 2016, only a year after Stallone stepped on the other side of the ropes in Creed, a reboot of the Rocky franchise starring Michael B. Jordan. The 2016 film is among the 140 titles being restricted on Netflix this month for subscribers to its ad-supported tier. This is done mainly for rights issues, as the streamer cannot earn revenue for certain titles.

The Boxing Drama That Netflix Is Restricting From Certain Subscribers

The movie in question is Hands of Stone, directed by the Venezuelan filmmaker Jonathan Jakubowicz. It grossed only $5 million worldwide against a reported budget of $20 million, and is now sitting at a 44% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The aggregator website’s consensus reads, “Hands of Stone‘s strong cast and fascinating real-life story aren’t enough to compensate for a crowded narrative and formulaic script.” The film also featured Usher as Sugar Ray Leonard, with Ellen Barkin, Ana de Armas, and John Turturro playing supporting roles. Hands of Stone premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and was distributed domestically by The Weinstein Company. Only a year or so later, the company would disintegrate following allegations of sexual misconduct made against Harvey Weinstein. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
