CBS is quietly building something bigger around one of its most successful dramas. What started as a single hit series is now turning into a connected world, with another expansion already being explored behind the scenes as the network eyes long-term franchise potential.
Fire Country and Sheriff Country universe to expand with medical spin-off
The world of Fire Country and Sheriff Country could soon grow beyond fire and law enforcement. As per Deadline, a new medical drama set in the same fictional town of Edgewater, California, is currently in very early development. The idea is to follow a team of healthcare workers operating in the same community.
Right now, the project is still at a very early stage. It reportedly doesn’t even have a writer attached yet and hasn’t been officially pitched to CBS or CBS Studios. Still, the creative team behind the existing shows is already involved. Executive producers like Max Thieriot, Joan Rater, Tony Phelan, Matt Lopez, and Jerry Bruckheimer are all expected to help shape the potential series
The network appears to be following a proven formula. Much like NBC’s One Chicago universe, which connects fire, police, and medical shows, CBS wants a similar multi-series setup. The plan could include introducing a new character from the medical drama in Season 2 of Sheriff Country before spinning them off into their own show.
This expansion isn’t surprising given the franchise’s success. Fire Country became the most-watched new show of its debut season, while Sheriff Country has also performed strongly, ranking among the top new dramas. Both series have already secured renewals for the 2026-27 season, and are widely loved by fans worldwide.
CBS has experience building long-running universes with shows like NCIS, CSI, and FBI. If this medical spin-off moves forward, Edgewater could soon become the network’s own interconnected TV hub, combining firefighters, deputies, and doctors under one shared storyline.
