Today, XBOX Travellers join together with the wider No Man’s Sky community as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. Ten years of collective adventure in this boundless universe.
From the start, it has been a wild ride, and it is difficult to think back to the humble beginnings when it was just the four of us in a tiny studio trying to make something almost stupidly ambitious. As a team, we’re hardly any bigger now, but the scale of the game completely dwarfs those first tentative moments.
Driven by our mutual love of science fiction and the wide-eyed wonder instilled in us by the vibrant book covers we grew up with, we were intent on bringing the imagination, colour and awe back to video games sci-fi, when so much of the genre had become grey and militaristic.
For us, science fiction was never solely about warring army factions across vast expanses of space, but about the colours, variety and weirdness that an infinite range of possibilities could offer up.
Couple that with a humbling sense of insignificance created by realising your miniscule place in the universe and we hoped to be able to offer an experience unlike any other.
From the outset, from that first planet, the mission was clear. What if you could wake up on a planet that no one had ever seen before, not even its creator?
What if that planet was teeming with flora and fauna so strange and alien that even the most powerful imaginations would struggle to conjure up?
What if that planet was just one of many different bodies that you would encounter in your home solar system as you made your first seamless sojourn towards the stars?
And what if that star was but a single speck on an intergalactic map which completely re-calibrated your mind as to how small you could feel?
But in stark contrast to all this vastness and technical wonder, we were striving to show how intimate and personal the adventures in this epic space could be.
Some Travellers would revel in the vast beauty of the worlds that they discover and find comfort in being alone with their thoughts. Others would find each other, build bases together and venture out together to worlds unknown, and every step along the way would be a new memory, a new shared connection.
There would be settlers, traders, fighter pilots and freighter commanders. There would be those who would steer away from conflict with the authoritarian Sentinels and pirates and crave a peaceful existence hopping through the star systems.
But there would be those who would want to max out their muti-tool arsenal and supe up their star ship fleet to be ready to take on any foe they encounter.
After 10 years and almost 40 major free updates, the No Man’s Sky sandbox has grown exponentially. We’ve introduced pets, mechs, living ships, expeditions, settlements, exocraft, base building and multiple world overhauls.
As long as the team are having fun conjuring up ever-crazier additions they want to add to the game, and as long as there is a passionate and positive community enjoying what they make, I’d love for this journey to continue.

Every other player lives in the same galaxy, and you can choose to share your discoveries with them on a map that spans known space.
