October is nearly here, and a new month means new TV shows and movies coming to Netflix — including Ridley Scott’s sci-fi masterpiece, The Martian. The Matt Damon-led film was a hit when it debuted back in October 2015, and there’s no better way to celebrate its 10-year anniversary than by bringing it to the popular streamer.

Those who missed The Martian when it was in theaters can finally see what all the hype was about; one viewing will swiftly explain the film’s popularity and its impressive 91% Rotten Tomatoes score. Even those who did see The Martian should take its anniversary and arrival on Netflix as a sign: it’s a great reminder to read the sci-fi book the story is based on.

There’s Still Time To Read The Martian Before Its Movie Adaptation Comes To Netflix

The Martian will arrive on Netflix on October 2 (via What’s on Netflix). And whether you’ve seen The Martian before or you’re gearing up to watch it for the very first time, it’s worth reading Andy Weir’s novel, too. Self-published online in 2011 — and then picked up for traditional publication in 2014 — it proved a standout sci-fi debut.

The novel became a bestseller, and it won the Goodreads Choice Award for science-fiction in 2014 and the Audie Award for Best Science-Fiction Audiobook in 2015. It’s no surprise it got so much positive attention, as it really is a masterclass in storytelling.

The Martian sees astronaut Mark Watney becoming stranded in space after he’s separated from his crew while on Mars. It’s a terrifying situation, but The Martian takes a unique approach to it. Not only is the book pretty accurate when it comes to its science, but it also takes a more lighthearted tone.

Most novels with similar premises don’t have these strengths, and both elements contribute to The Martian being a sci-fi book that’s considered a masterpiece. The movie captures its best qualities, but there are a few key differences between The Martian‘s book and its movie adaptation.

Those changes are one reason to read the book in addition to watching the film. However, there are other incentives. The Martian has so many great qualities that everyone should read it once — even those who don’t typically reach for sci-fi.

Why The Martian Is A Sci-Fi Book That Everyone Should Read

The Martian really is one of the best sci-fi books of the 21st century, which is impressive given that it’s Weir’s first book. And part of what makes it such a necessary read is the fact that it doesn’t just cater to sci-fi readers. The details of Mark’s story are clearly well-researched, which is a draw for fans of the genre. However, they’re also explained in a way that anyone can comprehend.

Mark’s characterization and the book’s signature humor add to the universal appeal, making Weir’s story a pleasure to immerse oneself in. Its high stakes make you want to keep reading, but they never make it too difficult to do so. The story, which could easily go in a bleaker direction, takes a refreshingly optimistic approach. Mark’s personality is partly responsible for that, and it makes it easy to root for and follow him.

All these details come together to make The Martian a memorable reading experience, especially for those hesitant to start reading sci-fi. Those who do enjoy the book and film, though, can also try out Weir’s other work. One of them is even getting its own adaptation next year.

If You Like The Martian, Andy Weir’s Other Hit Sci-Fi Novel Is Being Adapted Soon

Once you’re done reading The Martian — and watching its film on Netflix — it’s worth giving Weir’s other huge sci-fi title a try. Project Hail Mary is just as compelling, and it’s becoming a film in 2026, making now the ideal time to pick up the source material.

With the book having a huge following, and Ryan Gosling leading the adaptation, it seems inevitable that Project Hail Mary will become as big as The Martian. It’s truly a great time to be a fan of Weir’s work (and of the sci-fi genre in general).
