What happens when the serial killer your father put away appears to be connected to the disappearance of your child?
That’s the mystery at the center of The Whisper Man, Netflix’s new psychological thriller starring Robert De Niro, Adam Scott and Michelle Monaghan, streaming starting today.
Based on Alex North’s bestselling novel, the film follows Tom Kennedy (Scott), a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is abducted. Desperate to find him, Tom turns to his estranged father, Peter (De Niro), a retired police detective who once captured a notorious serial killer known as the Whisper Man.
The problem: the killer is already behind bars. As Tom and Peter begin investigating, they discover disturbing similarities between the disappearance and the crimes connected to the Whisper Man decades earlier.
Michelle Monaghan stars as Detective Amanda Beck, who becomes involved in the investigation, while Michael Keaton plays imprisoned serial killer Frank Carter. The cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, Will Brill and Acston Luca Porto.
Directed by James Ashcroft, The Whisper Man is as much a family story as it is a crime thriller. At its center is the complicated relationship between Tom and Peter, a father and son forced back together under the worst possible circumstances.
That emotional element was also part of what attracted De Niro to the project. Ashcroft has described the father-son relationship as the emotional core of the film, with the mystery providing the framework around it. For Scott, the role also hit close to home. The Severance star recently discussed drawing on his own experience as a father while portraying Tom’s desperation and fear after his son disappears.
The film arrived on Netflix today, August 28, making it one of the platform’s major new movie releases for the final weekend of summer.
