After dominating the awards season, it seems FX/Hulu’s Shōgun might be getting a Season 2 after originally being billed as a limited series. The historical drama made its small-screen debut in February 2024, instantly garnering praise from both viewers and critics. As such, many fans have been curious if a follow-up season would be produced for the hit show. Now, Shōgun’s creators have revealed that the series could be getting further installments after all.
Shōgun Season 2 creators give key script update
Shōgun creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks provided fans with an update on Season 2 at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards. After their win, the two creators confirmed that Shōgun Season 2 is currently in its scripting stage.
Talking about Shōgun’s highly-anticipated sequel season, Kondo stated, “Season 2, it’s ongoing, we’re still trying, we haven’t given up.” Nevertheless, she maintained the uncertainty surrounding the second season, adding, “I’m not sure what we can say.” Marks then provided some clarity on the progress of Season 2, saying, “We’re about six weeks from the end of the writer’s room,” as per ComicBook.com.
Planned as a one-off season, Shōgun’s immense critical and public acclaim has all but confirmed a second season. However, it is uncertain as to what story the season will follow in the series’ potential new installments. The debut chapter followed all the events of James Clavell’s 1975 novel of the same name, leaving no stone unturned.
However, Justin Marks has provided some details regarding what Shōgun Season 2 could entail. In an earlier interview with Variety, Marks stated, “We have been speaking with one of our historical advisors who we cherish, and talking just about, ‘Tell us a little more about William Adams here and Tokugawa Ieyasu there, and tell us about some new characters and some new things that are going on.’”
Despite the encouraging updates about Season 2, the series has yet to be officially renewed at the time of writing.
