Forty years after it first hit theaters, Manhunter is making its return in spectacular fashion. Studiocanal has released the first trailer for Manhunter: The Final Cut, a brand-new 4K restoration of Michael Mann‘s influential serial killer thriller that’s heading back to the big screen this summer.
While the film struggled at the box office when it debuted in 1986, its reputation has only grown over the decades. Today, it’s widely regarded as one of the defining crime thrillers of the era, with Mann’s stylish filmmaking, unforgettable atmosphere, and haunting performances helping it earn classic status.
This new release isn’t simply a visual upgrade. Mann has revisited the film with an updated edit that takes advantage of modern restoration technology while staying true to what he originally wanted audiences to experience.
Discussing the project, Mann explained: “Not only restore it to its former glory but to utilize new technology to create an experience as visceral for audiences in 2026 as the original was in 1986.
‘If the picture was left the way it was, it would be interesting, but you’d feel some distance… You’d be observing it somewhat. I’m more interested in its original intent impacting you the same way it may have in 1986… that is, to bring you into it again in the original way.'”
Based on Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon, the story follows retired FBI profiler William Petersen‘s Will Graham, who reluctantly returns to the Bureau to hunt down a brutal serial killer known by the media as the “Tooth Fairy.”
To catch him, Graham must seek insight from imprisoned psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecktor, played with chilling restraint by Brian Cox, years before the character became a pop culture icon through later adaptation.
The official synopsis reads: “It’s just you and me now, sport…” A retired criminal profiler (William Petersen) reluctantly returns to the FBI to help track down a serial killer of families and is forced to consult an expert – the imprisoned Dr. Hannibal Lecktor (Brian Cox in a subtly chilling performance).
The third feature written and directed by Michael Mann is a gripping adaptation of the first of Thomas Harris’ famed crime novels ‘Red Dragon’ and benefits from the filmmaker’s typically striking visuals, plus a top notch supporting cast including Tom Noonan as Francis Dolarhyde – the hunted killer known as the Red Dragon or the ‘Tooth Fairy’ – along with 3-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen as his blind love interest.”
The cast also features Kim Greist, Dennis Farina, Stephen Lang, and Tom Noonan, whose unsettling portrayal of Francis Dolarhyde remains one of the most memorable serial killer performances ever put on screen.
Manhunter marked Mann’s fourth feature film, arriving after The Keep (1983) and before later classics like The Last of the Mohicans. The film has become essential viewing for fans of psychological thrillers and crime cinema.
Manhunter: The Final Cut opens in U.S. theaters beginning July 24, 2026.
