This week’s Trailer Tuesday is kicking off spooky season a little early, and it’s doing it with a character you’d never expect to find there. Paramount Pictures dropped the official new trailer for Ebenezer, and the tagline says it all: “If you think you know his story, think again.”
As announced earlier this year at Comic Con, Johnny Depp stars as Ebenezer Scrooge — yes, that Scrooge — in a version of A Christmas Carol that’s been stripped of its usual warmth and replaced with something considerably darker.
The film comes from director Ti West, who’s built his career on horror (X, Pearl, MaXXXine), and the new trailer makes clear this isn’t a holiday-adjacent redemption story so much as it is a horror movie that happens to involve ghosts, chains and a miser with a very bad night ahead of him.
Depp’s Scrooge is surrounded by a genuinely loaded supporting cast: Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes and Charlie Murphy, with Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen rounding things out. That’s a lot of recognizable faces for a story most people think they already know going in, which seems to be exactly the point.
Behind the camera, West is working from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, with Emma Watts producing. The film comes from Paramount Pictures in association with Domain Entertainment, and is a Wattsco / IN.2 Films production.
Dickens adaptations are not exactly rare territory, but a horror-leaning one starring Johnny Depp, directed by the guy behind Pearl, is a genuinely different pitch — and the trailer leans all the way into that reframing rather than playing it safe. If West’s take on Scrooge is even half as unsettling as the marketing suggests, this could end up being one of the more unexpected swings of the fall movie season.
Ebenezer has not yet been rated and hits theaters November 13, 2026. Watch the new trailer above.
