Fans have been crying out for James Gunn and Peter Safran to cast Karen Gillan as Poison Ivy in his rebooted DC Universe. Stunning new art gives fans their first look at what she could look like in the upcoming Batman reboot.
Poison Ivy has been one of the few Batman villains left out of his modern age of films, leading many to hope Peter Safra and James Gunn would use her in their DC Universe reboot plans. Karen Gillan tops the list of many fans regarding actresses who should play her, with one fan editing Gillan to look like the Arkham series version of the character.
The art was made by BFHDesign on Instagram, who specializes in editing actors in dream roles. It’s currently unclear if Poison Ivy will even appear in the new DC Universe Batman project, let alone played by Karen Gillan. However, if this art is anything to go by, James Gunn and Peter Safran have a goldmine on their hands.
Andy Muschietti is directing the Batman reboot, titled The Brave and the Bold. It’s set to focus on Bruce Wayne’s iteration of Batman and his son Damian, who serves as the fifth Robin. During the recent DC Studios presentation at the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California, James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their plans to introduce the central Batman character for the broader DC Universe.
While Robert Pattinson’s portrayal of Batman continues in a separate universe helmed by director Matt Reeves, with a scheduled release in October 2025, Warner Bros. is actively seeking a second Dark Knight to anchor its interconnected DC Universe. The inclusion of the Damian Wayne version of Robin also promises an exciting dynamic within Batman mythology.
The future of the DC Universe
James Gunn and Peter Safran told journalists that their vision for the DC Universe includes locked scripts, wiggle room, and a unified storyline across film, television, animation, and video game projects. The two explained that the DC Universe could bring back elements from previous DC regimes, meaning that their eight-to-year plan is not a full reboot.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle have all been released following the announcement of the new DC Universe, with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom still slated to hit theaters in 2023. Will the characters from those movies make appearances in the new DCU? Only Gunn and Safran know.
