Does Warner Bros. Discovery have big plans for DC Studios? The company confirms that it has a 10 year roadmap to what may be their next blockbuster franchise.
It has been easy to get swept up in the excitement of DC Studios. Ever since the fallout of the Warner Bros. Discovery merger (and all the cancellations that came with) began to settle, fans have been focused solely on the here-and-now of the franchise. Every bit of news seems like a promise of greatness is finally being kept, even when almost no project has officially been released!
There is a confidence around DC Studios that simply didn’t exist for the franchise before James Gunn and Peter Safran took the reigns. And it seems as though even Warner Bros. Discovery is feeling the hype. When speaking during a recent quarterly earnings call (via Reddit), CEO David Zaslav confirmed that they have a 10-year plan for the franchise, and are very happy with where it’s headed so far.
“Looking ahead, we are excited about the strong slate across all of our studios, starting with DC Studios launching Superman in July,” Zaslav explained. “We’re wrapping on Supergirl and are deep into production on Lanterns, all part of our ten-year plan to reignite the DC brand globally and drive long-term franchise value.”
What Is DC Studios 10-Year Plan?
This 10-year plan may sound odd to fans who have been keeping a close eye on DC Studios. James Gunn and Peter Safran have made it clear that their priority is making good projects led by the writers and not by mandates from higher ups at Warner Bros. Discovery. The current slate reflects that. And it’s kind of hard to see how most of these projects can come together to form one “plan”.
The most likely explanation is that, unlike Disney and Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery isn’t banking on DC Studios pumping out one massive crossover at the end of the decade. Rather, they’re setting themselves up for a stream of singles and doubles, resulting in a consistently profitable franchise instead of one constantly teetering on bankruptcy.
